Charleston SC vacation was in the works for a while because 1. I missed it way to much, and 2. Dan had never been there!
We took the long Labor Day weekend and the excuse for an Anniversary trip to go to Charleston, SC for the weekend! Only 8 hours down 95 through 3 states and straight on 26 S. till you hit the beach! We left early morning Friday and drove south through 3 states stopping at South of the Border, and hitting the large metropolis at rush hour, or we will call it get off the island because its vacation time hour! On Fridays the islands spill out with workers and spill in with vacationers! Living down there, we wouldn’t go to the beach till later on Saturdays or all day Sundays! I kind of forgot this mentality and we were now stuck in traffic!
We got into the Charleston area about 2 hours before we could be in our rental, so I thought to take Dan out and around my old stomping grounds on Johns Island! I wanted to drive by the old neighborhood see if the houses I built were still standing, and check out the house I used to live in! So we stopped by Brownswood place, where I helped build 20 + houses, took a peak to see if I recognized or saw anyone I knew (I didn’t), then headed on to the scariest best road on the Island Bohicket Rd. We stopped by the Angel Oak tree (it is TOOOOOO big to fit in one photo), and Dan’s face was priceless when he saw it for the first time! After the quick tour of the island I used to call home we headed out to eat at JB’s Smokehouse and then on to Folly Beach!
Off to Folly Beach to stay for the weekend! We booked a rental about 5 months in advance with a lovely lady who lives in the mountains of NC and keeps a beach side rental on Folly year round! My kind of life! We rented the Folly Flamingo off of Homeaway online and could not of had a better experience! I highly recommend HomeAway and the Folly Flamingo! We were 1.5 blocks off the beach and 1 block from all the delicious local eats on Folly beach! We didn’t have to move the car all weekend if we didn’t want to! I was in heaven and if Dexter was with us Dan would have had to force me to leave :) I love Folly and Charleston!
I think we were in our rental .5 seconds before I was ready to head out the door to the beach! I just wish Dexter was with us! Folly is the most/best animal friendly little town one could ask for! Animals are allowed on the beach year round, WHHHAAAA??? you say, yes year round! During the beach season you are allowed to be on the beach before 10 am and after 5pm with your dogs, and during the off season all day everyday! It really never gets COLD so there you go! BEST beach town EVER in my eyes :) So out to the beach we go!
Saturday was all about BEACHing it and eating food! Starting the morning off with some coffee and pastries from Black Magic and laying on the beach before it got to crowded! Look how far out the tide was!
Lunch at Lost Dog Cafe (thanks Mom and Dad for the gift certificate)! This place is worth going all the way to charleston for :) On top of the delicious food, sweet tea in mason jars, and great atmosphere! They allow dogs to dine on the back porch with their owners! Are you seeing a theme here! Dexter WILL be going with us on our next trip down there!!!!!!!!
After the rest of the day on the beach and some lounging on the back deck of our condo, we met up with an old friend of mine from Americorps for dinner, and talked for around 2 hours! It was so much fun to reconnect with Jill, meet her hubby Scott and catch up on the latest that is Habitat, life on Johns Island, and life after Americorps!
Sunday there was a quick stop downtown (sorry no photos) and then of course back to the beach! After we had lunch at another local Folly beach joint the Wich Doctor! I mean seriously look at that amazing po Boy and pizza!!!! Oh it was so good, its making me hungry right now!
Before dinner there was only one more thing I really wanted to do before sadly getting back in the car to DC! The Morris Island Lighthouse! It is at the end of the road along Folly Beach and has been separated from land by the ocean but during low tide you can practically walk out to it on the sandbars! I had to show dan this gem and I love driftwood and there is a ton of it out there! Also a perfect place to slowly watch the sun go down!
To finish off an already AMAZING mini-vacation we had a brew at the Folly Beach Brewing Co. and more taco’s at Taco Boy! We only wish we had more time to try all the brews at the brewing co. Definitely on the list for when we go back sooner than later (5 years away is too long)!
After an amazing mini vacation and showing Dan FINALLY my love for Charleston and Folly Beach I think I have him sold on going back much sooner than later! He has already started making a list of places we need to eat at again, and try next time! In Folly and Charleston you can’t hardly eat somewhere that isn’t locally owned operated and served! I love this place and Charleston they will forever be my second/third home! They sure do have a special place in my heart after all!
